TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 10, 2022) – Robert Hight and the Automobile Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS continue to solidify their spot amongst the NHRA greats as they head to Heartland Motorsports Park for the Menards NHRA Nationals.
Hight is the Funny Car points leader on the strength of six wins this year in the Jimmy Prock and Chris Cunningham prepared Auto Club Chevy Camaro SS. With three regular season races and six Countdown to the Championship races ahead, Hight is poised to become just the sixth Funny Car driver to win as many as seven races in a single season joining boss John Force (who has done so on seven different occasions) Don Prudhomme, Kenny Bernstein, Ron Capps and Jack Beckman.
“It’s been a great season so far this year. To have six wins with this Auto Club Chevy team at this point, it’s just awesome,” Hight said. “We’ve already secured our spot in the Countdown so now it’s just maintaining and being consistent. We’re always aiming for perfection. I said I wanted to get win 60 this year and I think it will take getting win 62 or 63 to win this championship this year. Competition is so tight and there are a lot of good Funny Cars in this field. We’ll just take it one run, and one day at a time, starting in Topeka this weekend.”
Hight and the Auto Club Chevy, who picked up four wins on five final round appearances in the last seven races, have raced to victory at the Menards NHRA Nationals three times with back-to-back wins in 2010 and 2011 and more recently in 2019. They have also started race day from the No. 1 spot four times, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010.
