MADISON, Ill. (Sept. 29, 2022) – Robert Hight will be dawning the AAA Missouri livery on his Chevrolet Camaro SS at this weekend’s NHRA Midwest Nationals at World Wide Technology Raceway. The AAA team will be hoping to make the target on their back as the Camping World Drag Racing Series points leaders a little harder to hit with a long weekend at the third of six events in the NHRA Countdown to the Championship.
Hight is trying to become just the fourth Funny Car driver (after John, Kenny Bernstein and Don Prudhomme) to win as many as four NHRA series championships. Already only the sixth FC driver to have won as many as seven races in a season (along with John, Don Prudhomme, Kenny Bernstein, Ron Capps and Jack Beckman) after his victory at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pennsylvania. In addition to the seven wins, Hight has also had the AAA Camaro in the runner-up position three times. The 10 final round appearances this season are a personal best for Hight.
“This team has been working hard. They really have been nearly perfect and they’re striving for that every weekend,” Hight said. “We knew going into this Countdown that we were going to need at least two wins, maybe three, to get the job done and that’s proving to be true. We’re in the lead but we need every point we can get. Qualifying is important, those little points are important and then we need to get the job done on Sunday. This AAA team, they know what to do, we know how to bounce back. We’re ready for a good weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway.”
Hight and the AAA Missouri team are the World Wide Technology Raceway track record holders for both time and speed at 3.830 seconds, 338.60 mph, both marks established back in 2017. Hight has won the Midwest Nationals in 2010 and 2018 and has started from the No. 1 qualifying position four times (2006, 2016, 2017, 2018).
Competition at the NHRA Midwest Nationals at World Wide Technology Raceway begins with qualifying Friday at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. with eliminations at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Television coverage of the event will be on Sunday with a qualifying show at 12:30 p.m. ET immediately followed by eliminations coverage at 2 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 (FS1).
